Israel Cidon is a Tark Professor at the Electrical Engineering Faculty at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. His research interests include wire-line and wireless networks, Network on Chip and Multi-Core Processors.
He received the B.Sc. (summa cum laude) and D.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion in 1980 and 1984 respectively.
In 1985-94 he was a research member and the manager of the Network Architecture and Algorithms group at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, NY where he lead the world first implementations of packet based multi-media network (including the first hardware router) and metropolitan optical resilient packet rings (the technology was also used in the IBM – Serial Storage Architecture). For these works, he received twice the IBM outstanding innovation awards (1989, 1993).
In 1994-5 he founded and managed the high-speed networking group at Sun Microsystems Labs, Mountain View.
In 1981 he co-founded Micronet Ltd., an early vendor of mobile data-entry terminals; In 1998 he co-founded Viola Networks the provider of NetAlly – a VoIP diagnostic platform (acquired by Fluke Networks in 2008). In 2000, he co-founded Actona Technologies (acquired by Cisco in 2004) that pioneered the areas of Wide Area File Systems (WAFS) and Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS).
Between 2006 and 2010 was the dean of Electrical Engineering at the Technion.
He was a founding editor for the IEEE/ACM Transaction on Networking and editor for the IEEE Trans. on Communications. He is the co-author of over 160 refereed papers and 25 US patents.
